All features at a glance.
Drum brakes on all axles are standard equipment for the Zetros. Their encapsulated design protects brake components and is perfect for rough terrain – grit and water cannot get inside the drum. The driver’s workload is also reduced, thanks to finely controllable, precise braking action and uniform response.
Drastically increased brake force of the parking brake and thus greater safety thanks to the use of two additional combination brake cylinders on the front axle. Spring loaded brake cylinders are standard at the rear axle.
The Zetros interior remains comfortable – no matter what the weather outside. Drivers can concentrate on the task at hand, even in extreme climates such as deserts and permafrost regions
The spacious, steel cab was designed to help drivers complete long hauls and workdays as safely and comfortably as possible. To this end, the cab is equipped with a 3-point rubber mount, and seats are positioned behind the front axle.
The Zetros’ cab design helps keep overall height low when large tyres are fitted, allowing safe passage through low tunnels and under bridges. Furthermore, the 3-point mounting is installed close to the torsional axis of the frame which results in a reduction of lateral disturbances. The steel cab features a bonnet made of corrosion-free, high-strength composite material. Both cab roof and bonnet can be walked on, up to a load of 150 kg.
Controls and instruments are ergonomically positioned in line with tried-and-true Daimler standards, and will be instantly familiar to many drivers. The cab’s windshield extends down low, granting an excellent view of surroundings from the driver’s seat.
The Zetros cab offers excellent all-round visibility. Moreover, the engine bonnet in front provides a relaxed feeling, with intuitive steering similar to a passenger car. The position of the engine fitted at the front end of the body protects the crew and the windscreen from outside impact. Efficient safety features and a high-strength truck cab certified to ECE R29/2 ensure a very high level of passive safety.
Electronic parking brake system automatically sets and unsets the parking brake. It provides higher security due to an automatic system that applies the parking brake in the moment the driver stops the engine and pulls the key out of the lock. The parking brake also opens automatically when the driver wishes to accelerate.
Due to a low cabin floor and spacious interior, a fully fledged middle seat with 3-point seat belt is available and thus a third person in cabin is possible. The Zetros provides equal comfort to all persons of the crew and same security standard to all seats.
The Zetros has lower cab floor and less steps compared to cab-over-engine types, contributing to an easy walk through of the cabin, and less dangerous entry and exit of the cabin.
The cast-steel planetary axles are extraordinarily robust, allowing high axle loads. Moreover, Zetros comes with a spare wheel of equal quality to the standard wheels fitted to the vehicle ex-works. The spare is securely stored in a space-saving and easily-accessible location
The reinforced, ladder-type frame provides excellent strength and can transport substantial loads on all terrains. And it has high torsional flexibility even when equipped with heavy bodies. The front of the frame is constructed to allow the truck to be lifted or towed with ease, and to enable quick and simple mounting of attachments.
High ground clearance and compact outer dimensions mean Zetros can climb inclines of up to 35 degrees. Moreover, it can maneuver through deep water and mud, thanks to a fording depth of up to 0.8 meters.
The Zetros can be optionally equipped with mounting parts which are easily connected to the hole matrix on the frame – pre-installed consoles on the longitudinal elements of the chassis frame for bolting on bodies as well as mounting plates for fastening the sides of the body frame. The Zetros is ready and waiting for your specific superstructure.
The Zetros can be equipped with 3- or 4-leaf parabolic springs for the front axle. The 3-leaf parabolic springs for the front axle are designed for a load capacity of 7.5 t. The individual spring leaves are not located directly on top of each other, but are installed with a slight gap for corrosion protection. The same construction is used in the 4-leaf parabolic springs for the front axle, designed for loads up to 9.0 t. Specially tuned shock absorbers are used for both parabolic spring versions.
As standard, the Zetros is equipped with tyres of size 14.00R20 or 395/85R20. One huge advantage is that these standard-size tyres are readily available around the world. Besides these standard tyres, there are also increased tyres 16.00R20 available for the Zetros. The tyres offer a large diameter for high ground clearance and extreme traction. As an option, the tubeless tyres can be equipped with the Hutchinson run-flat system.
Appropriate design of components for off-roading, i.e. higher positioned radiator allows negotiation at appropriate gradients, thus no detour necessary and damages are avoided.
Steel bumper with integrated coupling jaw and integrated step
Each and every component in Zetros’s engine has been designed for the most demanding of deployments. It delivers both substantial horsepower and high torque. The engine’s cooling system has been engineered for high performance and extreme climatic conditions.
Radiator is perfectly suited to high performance in all circumstances:
The 2-speed VG 2800 transfer offers one road ratio, one off-road ratio and a switchable centre differential lock. The case distributes the power of the drive shaft to the front and rear axle(s). Permanent driving of the axles delivers the maximum possible propulsion. There is no loss of tractive power – unnecessary shift operations are eliminated. The centre differential lock contributes a high level of driving stability by compensating differences in rotational speed of front- and rear-axle wheels on one side.
Zetros boasts continuous all-wheel drive with mechanical differential locks. The proven transmission design enables excellent directional stability and traction – both on- and off-road. Moreover, the differential locks prevent individual wheels from spinning on rough terrain.
Manual transmission PTOs: gearbox-dependent and shiftable, a low-cost variant for driving a hydraulic pump without an additional propshaft. The installation of larger hydraulic pumps is possible thanks to large centre distance of spur gear drive.
The Zetros features several differential locks in the Zetros: at the front axle, rear axle, between front and rear axles plus between rear axles 1 and 2 (inter-axle locks). Differential locks ensure that distribution of power to all wheels is uniform – particularly essential when driving on off-road terrain or sand. The differential lock is activated by a rotary switch on the instrument panel and displayed on the Driver Information System.
Zetros has been conceived to limit downtime and make any repairs quick and simple, with easy access to the engine. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz has an extensive service network, so expert assistance is readily available in all four corners of the globe. This makes Zetros a reliable choice no matter where you are based, even in remote areas.
The programmable special module (PSM) is an interface that allows direct exchange of information between the vehicle electronics and the fitted equipment.
Mercedes-Benz’s standard components are designed and built with durability front of mind. They have been tested the world over, and come with “Made in Germany” quality. Plus, selected Zetros parts have been enhanced specifically to withstand extreme conditions and daily off-road stresses.
The Zetros is equipped with steel tanks and skid plates as reinforcement are available for all options, providing more resistance against physical damage and easy to repair.
Separable tanks for more control of fuel availability on remote expeditions. Tanks can be individually filled and emptied or connected for long routes . If one of it is broken, the Zetros continues driving with the second one.
Due to torsion during off-road travel, bodies and equipment attached to the frame require different mounting types:
Automatic cut-outs are fitted ex-works, instead of the standard blade-type fuses. After an overload, or after the fault has been remedied, the cut-outs are reactivated simply by throwing the switch. This simplifies operation, since you no longer need to exchange fuses or keep a wide range of blade-type fuses on hand. The fuse affected can be seen from the switch position, making troubleshooting much faster, too.
